He placed 8th in the 5000-meter race at the 1936 Olympics, Berlin Germany. After being taken prisoner in Ofuna (Japan) during World War II, he was awarded a Purple Heart Medal.
Laura Hillenbrand wrote a book about his life and it was adapted into a 2014 film called Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie. wrote an autobiography about him, which was later adapted by Angelina Jolie into Unbroken (2014).
He was the son of Anthony Zamperini (a couple from Italy) and Louise Dossi (a pair of Italian immigrants). He was raised with two sisters, Virginia and Sylvia, as well as a brother named Pete. From 1946 to 2001, he was married to Cynthia Applewhite. He had two children, Cissy and Luke.
