Emma Stone became a two-time Oscar winner on Sunday night and accepted her award while struggling through a wardrobe malfunction.
The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Stone was a big winner, taking home the award for best actress for her performance as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos' film "Poor Things."
As Stone ascended the stage in a mint-green peplum Louis Vuitton gown, she revealed to the audience that her outfit had a flaw.
"My dress is broken. I think it happened during 'I'm Just Ken,'" Stone said, referring to Ryan Gosling's rousing performance of the "Barbie" song earlier in the awards show. "I'm pretty sure."
Dressing stars is big business. According to WalletHub, the average cost of a star's look at the Oscars is $1.5 million, while it costs an estimated $10 million to complete the look of an A-list actress.
Thankfully, Stone told journalists backstage after accepting the award that she was quickly "sewn back in" to the dress — crisis averted.
"This is really overwhelming," Stone said onstage in her speech, shouting out her fellow nominees in the category: Annette Bening ("Nyad"), Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Fall"), and Carey Mulligan ("Maestro").
Stone, who previously won an Oscar for her work in "La La Land," recalled "panicking" about the possibility of winning. She said Lanthimos advised her to "take yourself out of it," prompting Stone to shout out the people responsible for "Poor Things."
"I am so deeply honored to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film," she said. "And Yorgos, thank you for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter. I'm forever thankful for you."
Stone also thanked her parents; her brother; her husband, Dave McCary; and their daughter, who's about to turn 3 and who she said "has turned our lives Technicolor."
"Don't look at the back of the dress," Stone said as she shuffled off the stage.
Of course, we did.
