Kingsley Ben-Adir brings reggae icon Bob Marley to life in the biopic "Bob Marley: One Love."
The new movie recreates the major events of Marley's life, from his departure from Jamaica following an assassination attempt to his triumphant return to the country to perform at the One Love Peace Concert in 1978.
Many real-life figures in Marley's life appear in "One Love," played by a recognizable cast of actors, including Lashana Lynch and James Norton.
Here's how the "One Love" cast compares to the historical figures they play.
Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Reggae legend Bob Marley.
Most of "Bob Marley: One Love" takes place between 1976 and 1978.
On December 3, 1976, Marley was the victim of an assassination attempt when a group of armed men stormed his home in Kingston, Jamaica. Marley, his wife, and three other people in the building were shot, but there were no casualties.
The assassination occurred during a period of political turmoil in Jamaica, and is believed to have been related to Marley's upcoming free concert, the One Love Peace Concert, organized to promote unity.
Stephen Davis, who has written numerous books about Marley, told Rolling Stone in 2017 that the government, led by the People's National Party, placed the next election directly after the concert. This made the event seem like an endorsement for the PNP, Davis said.
After the attack, Marley and his family moved to London, where he recorded "Exodus." Marley eventually returned to Kingston in 1978 to perform at his free concert.
Marley died of cancer three years later.
Lashana Lynch stars as Marley's wife and bandmate, Rita Marley.
Marley and Rita were aspiring young musicians when they met in the mid-1960s. They married in 1966 and had three children together. Rita also has three other children with other men.
Rita was a backup singer for Marley's band, but she took charge of his label and estate after his death.
James Norton plays record producer Chris Blackwell.
Chris Blackwell was one of the main record producers who worked with Bob Marley and his band, the Wailers, in the 1970s.
Blackwell created the record label Island Records aged 21 in 1959. Blackwell, who is still alive, helped make Marley a global star with the albums "Burnin'" and "Catch A Fire."
Davo plays the Wailers' guitarist, Junior Marvin.
Julian Junior Marvin is a guitarist who joined Bob Marley and the Wailers in 1977 while they were in London.
Marvin already had an accomplished career before joining the Wailers, including appearing in The Beatles movie "Help!" and performing with Ike and Tina Turner.
He stayed with the Wailers after Marley's death.
Sheldon Shephard plays Marley's art director, Neville Garrick.
Neville Garrick became the art director for Bob Marley and the Wailers in 1974, designing the covers for their albums. Garrick created art for "Exodus," one of Marley's most famous records which features in "One Love." He also created the design for Marley's posthumous album "Confrontation."
Garrick died of prostate cancer in November 2023.
Naomi Cowan plays a member of the I-Threes, Marcia Griffiths.
The I-Threes was a group of three female backup singers for the Wailers. The other group members were Marley's wife, Rita, and Judy Mowatt.
Griffiths formed the group in 1973 when she asked Rita and Mowatt to sing with her in a series of shows. Griffiths told Tidal's magazine in 2021 that Marley asked them to join the Wailers a year later.
Griffiths is known as the queen of Reggae and began performing at 15 in 1964. Griffiths also duetted with Marley before the creation of the I-Threes.
Anna-Share Blake portrays another member of the I-Threes, Judy Mowatt.
Mowatt was the first Jamaican woman to record a solo album with the release of "Black Woman" in 1979. The album was released under Marley's record label, Tuff Gong.
Umi Myers plays Marley's lover, Cindy Breakspeare.
Cindy Breakspeare is a Canadian-born Jamaican woman, who was crowned Miss World in 1976. According to her interview with Ron Fanfair, she met Marley that year and the pair had a romantic relationship until he died in 1981.
Breakspeare and Marley had one child in 1978, Damian Marley, who is also a musician.
